Why take a TEFL courseTeaching english overseas is a great experience to step into another culture and become a part of it. This tremendous experience is reserved for those who take the time to get to know the country, to work with the community, to live with the people and provides great opportunity for personal development. This is an experience that youll cherish for the rest of your life and create a positive impact on the lives of other people around the world. TESOL or TEFL course is a program designed to give you the confidence and knowledge that you need to teach english as a foreign language. This is fundamental in teaching english especially for inexperienced teacher who wants to obtain a great job in another country. Thus it gives us KSAs (knowledge, skills & ability) about classroom management, teaching techniques, lesson planning, evaluation, testing, using course books (to teach english language), lesson materials, equipment, teaching materials and so on. Although the program varies according to your course preference as to which field of english teaching you would want to pursue (whether it is business english, young learners and so on). Whats the difference between TEFL, TESL and TESOL? This is one common question that most people often ask. Since these acronyms are often used interchangeably and can rather be confusing for most people. 1. TEFL Teaching english as a Foreign Language This term is mainly used when teaching english is being taught in a country where english is not the native language (for example: teaching english to chinese in China) 2. TESL Teaching english as a Second Language This term is used when teaching english is being taught to non native speakers in a country where english is the native language (for example: teaching immigrants to usa, Canada and etc) 4. TESOL Teaching english to Speakers of Other Languages This term is used to encompass both TEFL and TESL 5. ELT english Language Teaching This term is mainly used for institutions in the UK Given the differences between the acronyms mentioned on the above, it gave me an idea as to which I should take into consideration and so thats why I decided to take tesol certificate and diploma course (from ITTT) since it encompass both TEFL and TESL. Although theres also another significant factor that one must consider and that is to choose a good / reputable english training school that is accredited all over the world. In that way, obtaining the course will serve as a gateway towards countless job opportunities in teaching english all over the world that gives you an advantage to find a better teaching position, travel anywhere in the world and manage your own time. Furthermore, one good thing about enrolling for a TESOL or TEFL course is the flexibility that it offers since they provide you with great options and flexibility whether you want to do an on-site training or online study that will satisfy your own personal needs. Apparently an onsite training / course can provide the trainee an actual experience about teaching english since the course have more teaching simulations to enhance the trainees teaching skills (especially for inexperienced teachers) unlike an online course. However on the other hand one good advantage in obtaining an online course is it allows the trainee to manage their own time at their own pace especially for working / professional people who have various commitments to deal with and couldnt make time to attend the class on a planned basis / set schedule by the school. Thus online can be advantageous for people who already have a teaching experience since actual teaching simulations isnt a must but rather to further develop ones teaching standards and career fulfillment (since most good schools in foreign countries require TESOL or TEFL prior to employment).
