Establishing RapportA good rapport between a teacher and his or her students can be a very important factor to a successful course, and should not be underestimated. When a teacher has established a good rapport, it means that he or she has gained the respect and trust of the students, which often leads to good behavior, a higher degree of attentiveness, and a generally amiable relationship. Establishing rapport with students is a key factor in creating the comfortable and healthy environment needed for students to actively practice, experiment and develop their language skills. Developing this good relationship though may be a more delicate matter than teachers expect. Some students may be very easy going, and excited to interact with native english speakers or westerners, which can make it relatively easy for teachers to build a positive rapport. However, other students may present a host of issues that prove this task to be much more difficult. Culture can play a large role as some teachers may not fully understand the societal norms of the country in which they are teaching in, and will have difficulty relating to students, understanding class dynamics, ensuring their own cultural sensitivity in class, and finding appropriate areas of interest. The level and age of students may also be a factor in developing good report. Young students required to take the class tend to be less motivated and may not be as fully invested in the class as their older counterparts. This may cause them to be less interested in developing a harmonious relationship with their teacher. Individual students may also have emotional or personal issues that cause them to be unruly, easily frustrated, or even feel threatened by authority figures, or they may just be very shy. Whatever the reasons may be why teachers have difficulty establishing good rapport with students, there are many things teachers can do to overcome these obstacles. Bringing the right attitude to every class is the first most important rule. Teachers should maintain a friendly, calm, and patient disposition to help put students at ease and to create a comfortable and positive learning environment. Students will be much more receptive to a teacher who is caring and kind. Passion and commitment are also important characteristics a teacher should display. These qualities can help to elevate the energy of the entire classroom, and students are again more likely to respond to a teacher who shows them dedication and passion for the subject. Careful preparation is also important as it shows the students that you are professional, in control, and committed to their learning. Careful lesson planning should include a variety of fun activities to help maintain focus and attention, and to help give students an enjoyable experience learning the language. In general, good preparation will help to earn students' respect and appreciation. Lastly, but just as important, teachers should try to get to know each student in their class and take time to learn about the culture and country in which they are teaching. Learning all of the students' names is one small and immediate way a teacher can demonstrate their interest in each individual student, and additional efforts to learn about their family life, career, hobbies, dreams, etc. can help to build a bond between teacher and student, and allow each student to feel important. Students should always feel that they are treated equally and fairly- playing favorites can quickly deteriorate class dynamics and relationships with students. Learning about the culture, traditions, history, etc. within the country can also be crucial in helping to establish rapport with students. Teachers can tailor topics or activities that may be more engaging and relevant for their class, and students may feel less distanced from the teacher if they see that he or she has an understanding of their background. Establishing good rapport with students may be more difficult for some than others, but teachers should always work to create and maintain a good relationship with all students. In the end, this will only help to strengthen the class dynamics and allow for a healthy learning environment for everyone.
