Why complete a TEFL courseFor many, it?s the opportunity to immerse themselves in a foreign culture; an opportunity otherwise unavailable to ?passers through?. For others it?s a great way to improve on existing skill sets or hone teaching methods. Then there are the noble among us who simply wish to assist in improving the lives of others. Whatever the reason, it?s a way to unlock possibilities previously obstructed from each of us by our daily grind. But why complete a TEFL course at all? While we?ve touched on probable motives for teaching in a foreign country, there must be a way to do so without subjecting ourselves to the stress and rigors of an intensive TEFL course. Surely it couldn?t be that hard, right? Wrong. Throughout the course it has become abundantly clear that anyone venturing into the EFL world without a qualification will not only be selling themselves short, but more importantly, selling short the students who have paid their hard earned money to learn another language, often with dreams and aspirations not unlike those of the teacher. Teaching anything requires training, structure, knowledge and planning. Teaching english as a foreign language is no different. The TEFL training we have received has equipped us with an understanding and direction to help lay the foundation for a clearly defined, well prepared, enjoyable and adaptable lesson. From an insight into the various teaching methodologies to developing a thorough ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) lesson plan, from breaking down and analyzing parts of speech to the identification and understanding of the many tense systems, it?s hard to imagine where we would have begun had it not been for our TEFL training. Very quickly it became apparent to us that our Secondary english education had barely scratched the surface; particularly in the area of grammar. After the initial realization (and subsequent panic attack) that we had been speaking the language our entire lives, yet really understood very little about it, we apprehensively sunk our metaphorical teeth in. Each intense grammar unit produced an initial, pained cringe from each of us. But by the end of that unit we were left with a strong sense of satisfaction that we had achieved something both significant and practical, and we were that one step closer to fulfilling our desire to teach english in a foreign country. Indeed, TEFL has paved the way for a satisfying career change and the opportunity to see the world vicariously through another culture?s eyes. TEFL courses are not only widely recognized and accepted, but also provide access to a network of aspiring english teachers from all over the world, as well as ongoing support in applying for your first TEFL job, the interview process and information on various countries and the opportunities within those countries. In addition to this, the courses offered are numerous and varied, depending on your lifestyle. We personally found the online course beneficial due to our ongoing, full-time employment and financial commitments. Whatever your lifestyle or motivation there is a TEFL course to suit you.
