Cultural Sensitivity in the classroomBeing aware that cultural differences and similarities exist and have an effect on values, learning, and behavior is called cultural sensitivity. The notion that cultures are different may appear to be straight forward, but there are many components of cultural sensitivity that require consideration. In order to be truly culturally sensitive it is important to value not only one?s own culture and how it may differ from others?, but to also be willing to adapt to another?s cultural norms and to learn about the traditions and characteristics that make their culture different from your own. In the classroom, cultural sensitivity is very important in both preventing and solving potential problems that could occur between teachers, co-workers, and students of different cultures. Cultural sensitivity can also make engaging with students and co-workers more effective because it means that there is a better understanding of how their values and behavior may differ. Having a good understanding of cultural differences can prevent many problems both inside and outside of the classroom. Even if you do not share the same values as the culture you are living and teaching in, it is still important to respect their beliefs and customs. Showing knowledge and respect of a culture?s values will earn respect in return, allow for easier communication and prevent awkward situations. Always make sure to go through the proper channels in your school in order to obtain student information or anything else. This will avoid problems that could arise not only with the students, but also with your director, other teachers, or even parents. Different cultures have different ways of going about things and it is always best to understand what is expected of you and never to assume that exceptions will be made for you because you are accustomed to a different set of values. If difficulties arise it is important to remember that within a culture there are differences in which individuals communicate. It is important to be flexible in your communication style and to pay attention to how the students respond to you. Depending on what they are accustomed to they may be sensitive to certain gestures, word choice, and voice intonation. Being culturally sensitive can help make communication more effective because the more you know about the culture of the person you are communicating with the better equipped you will be to understand where they are coming from and how to deal with problems that may arise due to miscommunication or cultural difference. When dealing with students it is always important to treat and talk to them in an age-appropriate manner and to be persistent in maintaining open conversation. If a problem occurs with a student, especially a miscommunication, look at it as an opportunity to learn new ways to communicate instead of becoming angry or frustrated that they don?t understand. Being culturally sensitive in the classroom also means that you must be an active listener without interrupting what is being said. This being said the students should hopefully treat you with the same respect and not interrupt you while you are talking to the class. It is also important to avoid making comparisons between students and instead think of them as individuals. Everyone prefers to be treated as an individual who is appreciated for being their own person. Remembering that you may not only have a relationship with your students, but also their families, is also important. Parents want to hear optimistic things about their children and even if there are issues that must be dealt with, make sure to strengthen your relationship with the family by also discussing positive things. Cultural sensitivity is a very important skill to have, especially when teaching english as a second language. Being able to show openness, caring and mutual respect of the dignity of individuals is essential to all good communication regardless of cultural differences. Taking steps to become more culturally sensitive is an important part of living and teaching in an unfamiliar place. Communication is difficult enough as it is, but the more you learn about another culture the better equipped you will be to understand and teach them.
