Foreign language experience Several times the TEFL course I have taken has, in my opinion, explained and legitimately focused on the importance for students to receive constant, genuine exposure to the english language. In many Units indeed, it has been emphasized that no matter what proficiency level they possess, students should regularly be propelled to improve their knowledge in order to attain what shall be their ultimate goal, namely the ability to communicate in english not only in a correct way but also as naturally as possible. If it is true that a foreigner will never be able to pick english up so well to resemble a native speaker, it is not inappropriate to state that nonstop practice by means of first hand experience of the language may have astonishing results. I do believe that some people have a particular aptitude for the learning of languages, which is obviously of great help, but since it is innate, such predisposition could not be simply acquired. Nonetheless, encouraging students to nurture and enhance their skills it is absolutely advisable, if not even due. It is easy to guess that mere teaching is not sufficient, reinforcing the language points learnt in class through intensive training with exercises is still not satisfactory either. In order to really work out on their capacities, students should be given the chance to put into practice what they have learnt by finding themselves in a stimulating environment which would prompt them continuously. Therefore, it is necessary to promote as many occasions for students to stay in Anglophone nations. A solution could be for pupils to have study trips abroad, but these usually only cover an inadequate period of time. It would be far more advisable instead to take english courses, which typically last longer, in english-speaking countries, but it would be even better to allow students to actually live in such countries for a considerable amount of time, thus enabling them to fully absorb all about their cultures and those aspects of the language which can?t always be covered during normal lessons. I strongly suggest then, at a certain point, that students find some time to spend living and working abroad, thus experiencing first hand what it is like to use the english language for common purposes in everyday life, which is what they usually aim at when highly motivated in taking classes. At least, this could be a good start. I have been abroad a few times myself as an au pair, and I truly cherish these experiences because not only they have made my dreams of travelling possible without going bankrupt, they have also enriched my personal growth but most of all they have been invaluable opportunities for me to employ the english language in concrete terms. Any way they would find to make this happen, it is essential to incite students to gain a deeper and more authentic insight into the english-speaking world so as to be fully immersed in the language and in order to be able to understand and appreciate its many different aspects. Ranging from pronunciation and phonology issues, to idioms or the expression of specific functions, what better way other than practicing the english language right where it is daily and naturally employed? Why, otherwise, promoting activities such as role-plays during the Activate phases of the lessons if not with the hope of performing them in real life eventually? Apart from other typical ways of learning like reading books in the original language for pleasure, listening to music or to the radio, watching TV programmes or films, in short availing oneself of authentic materials which any mother tongue would use, I ultimately think that the best resource would undeniably be having to deal with english 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a reasonable span of time.
