Course Review and AnalysisAs businesses become more and more international, the need for qualified workers who can speak english also increases. This creates a higher demand for people who can teach english as a second language. Many people would love to enter this exciting and rewarding field, but because of work or other reasons they are unable to participate in an in-class course to receive their training. This online TESOL course offers people in this situation to receive the training and instruction they will need to be successful when teaching english as a foreign language. After completing the course, anyone can be confident that they have received training on many of the most common and useful teaching methods, lesson planning skills, classroom organization techniques, as well as instruction on the english grammatical system. The course is very well organized and will guides through a wide variety of topics that are very useful and relevant in the classroom. The timeframe for completing the course allows plenty of time to complete the assignments and lets participants work at their own pace. The deadline for completing it is reasonable but not too long so that the information that was learned in the course will still be retained at the time of completion. The online course consists of 20 units that will be given by an online tutor. After completing the worksheets that accompany each unit, the online tutor will review the work, give feedback, and point out important items or areas that need focus. The course begins by teaching about the roles of teachers and students in the classroom. In the first lesson, you learn about the qualities that make a good teacher, roles of teachers, and different kinds of learners. The second lesson is an introduction to english grammar and the parts of speech. The lesson is extremely useful, as even most native speakers could probably benefit from a review of these items. The third lesson introduces the EFL methodology and the ESA (Engage, Study, and Activate) teaching method. The lesson discusses each phase of the ESA method and gives useful ideas for each stage to use in the classroom. The information given here will be used throughout the entire course when preparing lesson plans for future lessons. Unit 4 is an overview of the usage of the present tense in the english language. It covers all forms of the tense, including simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous forms. The course will also cover the past and future tenses, as well as all forms of each. However, in order to break up the grammar lessons so it does not seem too tedious, the unit on past tense will be covered in unit 6, and the future tense in unit 8, with the units in between covering other topics besides grammar. All three of these units are very useful. Immediately after completing these units, you will have greater confidence whenever asked to explain any language points related to past, present, and future tense forms. In unit 5 classroom management and organizing skills will be introduced. This unit outlines some of the important aspects of managing and grouping students and teaches some basic skills including giving instructions, establishing rapport, and maintaining discipline. Teaching new language and the vocabulary, grammar, and functions involved is the topic of unit 7. The unit provides techniques for teaching vocabulary and language functions, and introducing grammatical structures. Some of the items discussed in the unit include how to select appropriate vocabulary, methods for teaching language structure, and how to teach language functions such as greetings, invitations, or suggestions. The unit on lesson planning is extremely useful. Unit 9 features important factors to consider when planning an EFL lesson. In this lesson you will learn the basic components of a lesson plan. The skills learned in this lesson will be used throughout the remainder of the course, and then afterwards in the real world. The model lesson plan that is taught in this lesson can be adapted to fit the needs of almost any classroom. The DVD lesson contained in unit 10 was very informative. The teacher on the video demonstrates both the right and wrong way to conduct a classroom. In the first half of the video, the teacher performs in an unacceptable manner that makes you almost feel sorry for the students stuck in the classroom. In contrast, the second half of the video shows the same teacher giving the same lesson, but in a completely different way. This time, the teacher is encouraging and motivating. The lesson is engaging and fun. The most obvious thing to observe from this video is the contrast between the students in the two lessons. In the first lesson the students are bored and not paying attention. In the second, they are smiling and participating. While learning english, there are four language skills, (two receptive skills and two productive skills) that students must develop. The two receptive skills are reading and listening. Speaking and writing are the two productive skills. Lessons 11 and 12 cover the four language skills, give techniques for teaching and ways to encourage students to speak and participate in class activities. Unit 13 covers how to teach pronunciation and intonation. The unit teaches techniques for indicating and teaching intonation and stress. Correct pronunciation will build student?s confidence because it will allow them to better express themselves. It?s a good idea for a teacher to devote at least some portion of the course to proper pronunciation if necessary. The next two units demonstrate how to make best use of course books and testing and evaluation methods. Unit 14 shows the advantages and disadvantages of using a published course book, and the differences between authentic and created lesson material. Unit 15 explains the different methods of testing and evaluation and how to maximize their use. Unit 16 focuses on teaching students how to form sentences that contain conditionals and reported speech. This unit teaches the five main conditionals and gives teaching ideas for each. It also covers how to convert sentences to and from reported and direct speech. The different types of equipment and teaching aids used in a typical EFL classroom are covered in the next lesson. Unit 17 lists many of the most common resources and equipment that an EFL teacher may consider using and provides details about each. This unit is very informative and gives many good ideas about how to use these items in a practical way. Unit 18 is an overview of several language items that are taught in EFL classes. These include modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice structure, relative clauses, and phrasal verbs. This lesson is extremely useful as many teachers are most likely to encounter questions related to these topics. After completing this unit, it is easy to have greater confidence whenever having to explain to someone grammar that involves any of these issues. Teaching special groups is something that many teachers are likely to have to face at some point. This could include a class of beginners, a business english class, monolingual or multilingual classes, or small children. Unit 19 does a good job of covering each of these areas in detail and provides wonderful ideas that can be used in the classroom to deal with each group?s special needs. The unit teaches how to assess the needs of students and the importance of learning about each individual student. The final unit is devoted to troubleshooting some of the likely situations that teachers will have to face in the field. This lesson discusses what needs to be done on the first lesson and how to create introductions and warmer exercises to learn about your students, build rapport, and assess the student?s needs and abilities. It also covers some other situations that a teacher may encounter, such as large classrooms, students reverting to their native language during speaking activities, and encouraging students who are reluctant to participate. Overall, this course is highly informative and practical. The teaching methods and techniques that it demonstrates are very useful and relevant in any EFL classroom setting. After completing this course, I feel very confident in my skills and ability to teach english as a second language. I am looking forward to an exciting teaching career. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is looking to enter this field.
