There are many uses for tests. They can be used as progress reports for students in class, to determine a students ability before entering an ESL class, and as practice to prepare for a test outside of the classroom. In the classroom the frequency of testing is up to the teacher. For example a few small test covering parts of the material leading up to a big test that covers all of the material studied so far. There are also many external tests offered around the world. These tests tend to have special purposes ranging from simple evaluation of one's current language ability to evaluating one's ability to work in a foreign country.
