Unit 20 discusses common problems and troubleshooting those problems in the classroom. The first concept and a very important one is to establish rapport with the students and if it is a completely new classes for the students, to build rapport amongst the students with each other as well. It is also important to find out the English level of the students as well, so an inventory of skills, a survey etc.. would be wise. Also playing a \"get to know you game\" is vital so that everyone feels comfortable. It is most important for the teacher to participate in the games as well so that the students can feel a connection and feel relaxed with the teacher. For each beginning class it is also important to do 'warmers': this helps students to get into the mood of speaking Engish and helps to transition their mind into the language for further study during the class. Tips with working with varying levels of English students include pairing up the advance students with the weaker students and/or assigning the same material to all students but expecting and assigning more challenging work to the advance students. Also to have the advance studetns help the weaker studetns is good as well. It is important to make sure however, that the advance students are not bored and that the weaker students do not feel overwhelmed and frustrated. Role play, gentle encouragement, scripted exercises and group/pair work is suggested for classes that have many students who are shy and do not participate well vocally on their own. Another idea would be to encourage the student to speak into a recorder on their own and to later play it back to the teacher so that the teacher can monitor their progress.
