This unit discussed ways in which to teach specialized groups. This includes young learners, individual learners, business learners, and monolingual/multilingual learners. Tips, methodologies, techniques, and advantages/disadvantages were discussed in relation to each specialized group. For example, young learners are curious and quick learners but require fun and varied activities to keep them interested. It is up to the teacher to keep them attentive and motivated. Individual learners, on the other hand, are usually highly motivated and attentive. However, there are less interactive activities that can be done with individual learners due to the fact that there is only the teacher and learner present. The text also advised that extra material be brought to individual learner classes because the probability of covering all the material quickly is higher than with a classroom full of students. A major problem with teaching business/adult learners is the age and differentiating levels of english of the students. Teachers must therefore be sensitive not to offend or embarrass anyone and to keep all levels interested and learning. Needs analysis questionnaires were encouraged by the unit as they can help a teacher organize the goals, lessons, and material for the course. Finally, when teaching monolingual classes, there is an advantage of cultural similarities and difficulty similarities among students; however, with multilingual classes, there is an advantage of having all the students forced to use English to communicate. These are just a few examples of the information I picked up in this unit. Overall, it was extremely helpful in discerning how to approach different groups of learners.
