As the learner is progressing i.e. increasing his/her level of language proficiency, the grammar he/she is learning becomes more complex. Parts of speech are being taught at an early stage, namely: 1. Nouns - types: common (e.g. toy), proper (e.g. Europe), compound (e.g. suncream), abstract (e.g. love), collective (e.g. herd) - plurals: regular (-s/-es), irregular (e.g. foot-feet) - countable (e.g. car)/uncountable (e.g. music) 2. Adjectives - comparatives (-er - happier; more - more beautiful) - superlatives (-est - happiest; most - most beautiful) 3. Articles - indefinite: a/an (unknown thing: a before initial consonant sounds, an before initial vowel sounds) - definite: the (before known thing) 4. Verbs - action (e.g. run), state (e.g. feel) - transitive (followed by an object), intransitive (not followed by an object) - infinitive (e.g. to go, to eat) - verb forms: base (e.g. go), past simple (e.g. went), past participle (e.g. gone), present participle (e.g. going) - auxiliary: be, have, do 5. Adverbs - manner, place, time, degree, frequency - form: adjective + ly - exceptions: fast-fast, etc. 6. Gerund - -ing form of a verb used as a noun (e.g. Playing tennis is fun.) 7. Pronouns - personal, possessive, reflexive, relative 8. Prepositions/Conjunctions - prepositions: time, direction, position - conjunctions: join words of the same class, join clauses This lesson is a great starting point for learning grammar. It provides basic information on parts of speech which is going to be build up as the level of language proficiency is increasing. Personally, even though the Unit was a review, it helped me to establish my knowledge on this grammatical segment (and recall forgotten information).
