This unit covered Teaching Special groups. The five groups discussed were 1)Beginners, 2)Individual Students, 3)Children 4)Business English, and 5)Monolingual/Multilingual classes. The two groups I find the most interesting, and therefore will discuss further, is Children and Mono/Multilingual classes. Young Learners can lack motivation as they are often required to take the class, but they are usually able to learn a language quicker and easier than adults. It is important to use many activities/games within a lesson so the children stay engaged, to use lots of encouragement and praise so they don't get discouraged, to stay calm and patient as often the lesson plans will need to be revised, and it never hurts to act silly and have fun so students will be motived to continue learning and won't get bored. As a beginning ESL teacher, I would find iy easier to teach a monolingual class. The same difficulties with the English languale are usually met by all students therefore the way to handle it would be similar. Also, there's a greater chance that the students will be at the same level and can help each other learn. As I gain more experience as a teacher, it would be an enjoyable challenge to teach a multilingual class as the variety of nationalities would keep the activites/interests fresh and it would be a good way for all students to learn about other cultures. The class would most likely be in an English speaking country with the students exposed to English daily, so the learning curve would be higher and we could potential cover a lot more material. Regardless of the type of class I will be teaching, I am looking forward to working with international students and teaching them English!
