The focus of this unit was on the application of ESL teaching techniques in the classroom. By watching two contrasting videos - one showing a lesson that didn't go well, the other showing a lesson that was much more successful - I was able to clearly understand how various mistakes on the teacher's part can have a dramatic effect on the class. The first lesson was extremely uncomfortable to watch. The impersonal and unengaged attitude of the teacher made the classroom atmosphere extremely tense. By not bothering to learn the students names, nor praise them, nor check up on them as they completed classwork, the teacher came across as cold and uncaring. The absence of an engage phase, which is meant to kick off a lesson with a fun activity in which everyone participates, and the subsequent confusing and condescending presentation of the lesson's grammar point started the lesson off with the students clearly feeling frustrated, confused, and intimidated. The second lesson was an incredible improvement. Everything was better. The teacher smiled, introduced himself, and frequently addressed the students by their names. The lesson was well-organized, and one activity complimented the next. Because of the teacher's improved attitude, and the improved organization of the lesson, the students participated more, and seemed to have a very good time. They even applauded at the end. It's clear that both attitude and organization are both vital components of a successful lesson. A well-organized lesson isn't going to be enjoyable for the students if the teacher is cold and distant; and even the most charismatic teacher cannot teach effectively without having a clear idea of how he or she is going to teach the material.
