Teachers may have access to a plethora of teaching aids at their school or they may have access to very few. The range is quite phenomenal. That being said, many teaching aids can be created as long as the teacher puts forth a little creativity. A great example of this is the creation of visual aids. While in many instances one can find clear visual aids or realia, teacher-made flashcards many times work just as well. The purpose is to clearly communicate the idea with the students, stimulating conversation and recognition, without abusing teacher talk time. The most indispensable tool for language teaching is a board on which to write. Teachers must plan out what they are going to write on the board. This guarantees that the information they will present will be presented in a clear, concise, and effective manner. The use of sections is also highly recommended as the students will see visually the different ideas being presented. Technology is also becoming a huge part of language teaching. The main thing to remember about technology is that it is not infallible; teachers must have a back-up plan when teaching a technology-based lesson. While videos and audio can be used to help students practice their receptive skills, cassette and video recorders can also be particularly helpful in the classroom. These tools allow the students to be recorded. They can then monitor their progress, analyze their success on the task, and compare their speech to a native example from said recordings. Lastly, no matter what teaching aids are used in the classroom, the students must be taught how to use the material most effectively. A teacher must always ask: have the students been shown how to use this resource to its fullest potential?
