In this unit, we learn about two of the four basic language skills, reading and listening. Ideally a lesson will have students practice all four of these skills, even if the lesson is mainly centered on only one of them. All four of these language skills are equally important. Reading and listening are receptive skills. People use these skills for a purpose or for entertainment. How we process the information we obtain depends not only on how to decipher text and dialogue, but also on our personal backgrounds and experiences. To keep students engaged, a teacher should use material that he thinks the class will find interesting, not just material the teacher finds interesting. Also, although authentic material can help students build confidence, it may also have the opposite effect if presented to students at lower levels, thus a teacher needs to be aware of whether using such material is appropriate or not.
