Unit 11 introduced receptive skills - listening and reading. From this lesson, I learnt that we don't just read and listen with our eyes and ears but we also use specialist skills. The more experience someone has with these skills the better their understanding will be with context. Examples of these skills are predictive skills, ability to scan, skim, or deduce from context. These skills take practice to master so it is important to give students many opportunities to use these skills. Students don't need to understand every single word of something they are listening to or reading to be able to grasp the general idea of it, so it's a good idea not to over-teach them before they try for themselves. Using authentic texts are a good way for students to practice the specialist skills however the materials should be carefully selected as to not include too much unknown material which may demotivate the student.
