From this unit I learned how important introducing unfamiliar vocabulary words before they encounter it in reading or listening, especially if it is a more independent reading/listening activity. I was also reminded of the benefits of combining reading and listening; providing a visual for the students as they listen can be beneficial because they can both hear and see words at the same time. I think it is important to have balance, though. Always allowing students to see words while listening to them can cause their receptive skills to diminish. I was interested in reading about allowing students to access unknown language; doing this helps them to make connections to vocabulary and sentence structures they already know. I also appreciated this unit's attention to student interest and the types of texts they might enjoy to enhance language learning. The task materials in this unit were helpful and engaging.
