This unit covered modal auxiliary verbs and the passive voice. Modal auxiliary verbs, such as could, would, might, can, shall, may, must, etc. are used in combination with another main verb, in order to highlight suggestions, obligations, deductions, etc. They can often be used interchangeably, such as \"He might be in school right now\" (suggestion, uncertainty) and \"You might want to get that checked out\" (Suggestion). The passive voice is created by making the object of the sentence the subject of the sentence, followed by the conjugated form of \"to be\" and the participle: \"She mowed the lawn yesterday\" would turn into \"The lawn was mowed by Julia yesterday.\" When one uses the passive voice, the emphasis is put on the former object of the sentence (the lawn). Also, when one does not know the agent, or one doesn't want to reveal the agent, the passive voice is practical (He was murdered yesterday).
