Teaching past tenses is quite similar to the present, although they should be taught separately it may be a good idea to teach both tenses in a similar format, as to simplify the learning approach for students. I like the idea of teaching the past in conjunction with review of the present tense; making activities that review the present tenses taught prior as well as introducing these same terms in the past. It might be beneficial to introduce when to use each tense before the actual tenses themselves, as to say 'we did this', 'we are doing this', or 'this was done' then show how each other these tenses are separate and identified as simple past, past perfect and the like. This allows students to not be confused by the tense forms as much as to recognize that each should be used separately. Review and practice is essential in teaching the tenses. As a teacher it is crucial to stay positive and patient with the students.
