Speaking and writing are a pair that personally for me contains my weakest and my strongest skills as a foreign language learner myself. Like what the unit said, writing as a skill requires much more precision and planning than speaking and communicating casually with others in the said language. But for myself because of these aspects, writing felt a bit more controllable and malleable to me than speech. I believe there will be a variety of students for whom writing feels like a safe haven and others who thrive when practicing the language in spontaneous speech. In either case, I do believe the underlying goal of production proves to be incredibly valuable and something that the teacher should most definitely invest a lot of time and care into. I think the suggestions about pair work and encouraging students to keep practicing speaking with each other (if they are too shy to do so in a larger classroom setting) are particularly noteworthy.
