Unit 11 reviews strategies and considerations for teaching receptive skills (listening and reading). It explains that the way in which we read/listen and understand is also informed by one or more of the following: predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for the gist, focusing on detailed information, and deducing from context. The unit provides advice for preparing lessons thart teach receptive skills. It encourages teachers to choose material that interests students, to build interest before reading/listening (through ?engage? phase activities), to pre-teach complex vocabulary or structures, to vary the type of material, to use realistic comprehension tasks, and to incorporate activate phases. I appreciated the included sample materials, as they allowed me to see what sorts of activities might help promote understanding and lead to more substantial engagement with the subject matter and language points.
