In this unit it we have examined teaching receptive skills, i.e. reading and listening. We have seen that both authentic and non-authentic texts/listening materials can be used, but that authentic materials need to be carefully selected so that they suit the level of the learners. Non-authentic materials are typically produced so that they suit a specific learner-level anyway. We have seen that we read and listen in different ways according tof the information that we require from materials: scanning, skimming, predicting and finding detailed information are some of these methods. It is also useful in many cases to pre-teach some unknown vocabulary before giving students authentic material, but this shouldn't be in so much detail that students don'the learn to understand the 'gist' of a piece or learn to accurately guess at meaning withough knowing every single word. Encouraging 'global understanding' of texts/material should be prominent.
