This unit helped me understand the different conditionals found in English, and how/when each one should be used. Each conditional contains an 'if' clause and a 'consequence' clause. There are a total of 5 conditionals, namely: Zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional and the mixed conditional. Each conditional uses a different form. The unit also covered the differences between reported and direct speech. Direct speech involves actual speech which was used, where as reported speech involves reporting that direct speech to another person. I learnt that the tense of the direct speech determines what the tense of the reported speech will be. For example, present simple direct speech would be reported in the past simple. Although it seems as if this follows a simple pattern of simple --> past, this does not always apply. For example, direct speech in the past perfect would stay in the past perfect if reported.
