What I learnt from Unit 11 is about teaching receptive skills. There are four basic skills language: Receptive skills (reading and listening) and Productive skills (speaking and writing). All are equally important and bring connection into how the teaching progress. There are two reasons and motives for reading and listening; first is for a purpose. For example; reading a guideline book how to install a Lego, or by listening to audio language will improve our own skills. Second is for entertainment, the reason for listen or reading is to find the meaning of pleasurable (enjoyable) in some way. For example: listen to a stand-up comedy or reading a comic books. In term of the meaning of reading and listening is to understand the words and process them into our brain, so we get the idea what the topic talks about. There are some skills that readers and listeners used to get the point of view of the topic: Predictive skill (guessing from the headline or introduction); scanning specific information, skimming general idea of the story (book or audio); detailed information, and deduction idea from the context. I also learn about the accuracy versus the fluency of the language use. The Accuracy of the language is the correct use of language, and fluency is able to speak the language without stopping to think. There are many ways of approaching language difficulty: pre-teaching vocabulary is to teach them unknown language and structure before a reading or listening activity. So they could understand the meaning of the text. Another ways also in term of carefully selecting the listening and reading materials to the students that could suit to the student?s abilities. In conclusion, teacher should create a variety of interesting topics, over period of time that will attract the interest and motivation of the students.
