This unit focused on the different kinds equipment used by a teacher in addition to the various visual aids used in the classroom. A few of the pieces of equipment are related in that they're all used to present text or visual to the entire class. These pieces of equipment include white boards, interactive white boars, and overhead projectors. White boards are most common and it's important to keep it organized and avoid using capital letters to emphasize things. IWBs offer additional abilities due to the digital elements added, but aren't widely available and require preparation time to use effectively. OHPs offer the benefits of the white board while allowing the teacher to prepare materials ahead of time and present them while remaining in a position that's more accessible to the class. (ie not having their back to the class while writing) Another category of resources was external reference materials or large prepared bodies of information. This includes dictionaries, course books, resource books, and online resources. There is a wide amount of information regarding language and accessing many resources is valuable. Another category was multimedia and playing devices such as cassette recorders, CD players, videos, DVDs, video cameras, and computers. These can all be used to present unique, interesting and authentic media to students. Strictly audio forms allow for pronunciation practice and pure listening comprehension skills, but the added visual aid of a video greatly increase understanding. It's important not to overuse resources like this as their effectiveness in the class can dwindle with overuse. Visual aids, worksheets, and work cards are all additional more classic resources in the class. These are great for eliciting, teaching, and studying vocabulary and grammar structures. These materials are very common.
