Unit 10 provides two contrasting videos that demonstrate how a teacher?s attitude can affect the productiveness and enthusiasm of a class. Students seemed much more enthusiastic and excited to participate when there were open class discussions and small games in the beginning of the class. In the video where the teacher immediately jumped into modal auxiliary verbs, students seemed bored and confused. They were not eager and actually seemed too intimidated to participate because the instructor became impatient with incorrect answers. In contrast, the students showed a lot of interest in creating a long list of animals and were excited to work fast when they were timed in the second video; they willingly participated in the class discussion as a productive group. In the first video, the instructor used longer and sometimes complicated language that students could not understand. This caused them to seem confused during class discussions and practice exercises. However, the use of hand gestures, students? names, and simple language in the second video helped keep the pace of the class moving and the level of participation high. The first video also showed the instructor not taking the opportunity to monitor students when they were completing worksheets so that he could read a book instead. The classroom setting and management also showed impact in students? productiveness. Where the lighting was poor, students were slowed down and seem drowsy. In contrast, the classroom in the second video was well-lit and kept up students? spirits. The second video also demonstrated the instructor utilizing the horseshoe seating arrangement for group work which helped promote student-student interaction and creative ideas. Overall, the second video showed eager students that were willing to share their knowledge in contrast to the first video.
