Unit 9 highlights how and why to plan your lessons. There are various ways to plan your lessons and there is not just one right lesson plan format. However, whatever the format you use, a lesson plan has three important functions: 1) Help you in planning/organising your lesson(s) 2) A working document to keep track of learning goals/targets and your own development targets 3) As a record to look up what you did weeks or months ago and to make it easy for a substitute teacher to cover your class when you?re ill or away. Especially for inexperienced teacher it is recommended to create a structured lesson plan and to include the following details: A) Learner objectives ? What you want your students to be able to do by the end of the lesson. B) Personal aims ? An area of your teacher that you wish to improve C) Language point ? The theme around which your lesson is based D) Teaching aids - Materials and equipment needed to run the lesson E) Anticipated problems for student and teacher and solutions F) Procedure ? The activities used to achieve the learner objectives G) Phase ? Engage, Study or Activate H) Timing ? How long will each activity take approximately I) Interaction ? Teacher-Student, Student-Student or Individually J) Class level K) Number of students L) Date/time M) Teacher?s and observer?s names In addition to creating a lesson plan, it is recommended to monitor your lessons and fill in self evalution forms afterwards to keep track of your own development and note down how you could improve this particular lesson in the future. What went well? What are areas of improvement? When planning a sequence of lessons it is advisable to build in flexibility, learning goals and revision exercises. Plus, ensure all skills are included in a balanced way and there enough variety in the activities.
