This unit explains how to manage the class. Eye contact, gesture and voice have an import role. They are essential to establish a good rapport with the students. There are different ways to group students. Whole-class grouping creates a sense of belonging among the group but can be off-putting to shy students. Idividual work will allow teachers to respond to individual differences in pace of learning, ability etc. Pairwork will increase student talking time and student to student interaction. Groupwork like pairwork will increase student talking time but it takes longer to organize and some members may dominate. Classroom arrangement can consist of orderly rows which has been the traditional form of seating for many years in most schools. The teacher has a clearview of all the students and all the students can see the teacher. Circles and horseshoes are used in smaller classes. The teacher's position is less dominant. Separate tables are used in small groups at individual tables. Board-work is essential as well in the classroom. Teacher talking time is important as the teacher should be able to prove the students with a source of natural, correct English. It's important not to over-elaborate and keep it simple. While giving instructions, the teach should use simple language, be consistent, use visual clues and ask questions to check if the students understand the instructions. Maintaining discipline depends on the age of the students, motivation, class size, school's code of conduct and respect between students and teachers. A teacher can prevent problem behaviour by being punctual, well prepared, never loose his temper and be consistent and fair. If problem behaviour shoud arise, the teacher should act immediately and keep the problem student behind after class for a private conversation. It's important for the teacher to stay calm and don't shout.
