This unit focused on teaching special groups including beginners, individual students, children, and business English (or English for a specific purpose). You may need to teach various (and mixed) levels of beginners, this unit gave many tips and possible problems for beginners. It is important not to overcorrect the students, you must be sensitive to them and give them a relaxed environment with lots of praise and encouragement. For teaching individual students, you can tailor the lessons to their individual interest, experiences and needs, creating more motivation for the student. You may have a student that wants only conversation, but you should weave in vocabulary and grammar points as well. It is good to know that individual lesson students frequently cancel. Children should be taught in English only to keep them interested and motivated. Lessons should be taught slowly and clearly with plenty of demonstrations of the response required. Children like activities, and like seeing the teacher be silly. They also have shorter attention spans, but usually can learn quickly, and respond to rewards. Business English can have its own unique challenges as the classes may take place at the work environment. Attendance can vary, clients may be pulled out to work, and they may be very tired. For this environment, it is important to be able to adapt to the needs and situations as they arise. It is also essential to assess what the clients already know, and learn their needs and desires specific to their work environment/needs. Additionally, monolingual and multilingual classes have advantages and disadvantages as well. Multilingual classes may be less likely to talk, but will likely have different problem areas with the language. Monolingual classes will likely have similar difficulties but will miss out on varieties of peoples creating cultural enrichment.
