This unit is dedicated to books and materials. I agree that course books can be a very emotive issue for many teachers. The materials that we use during the class can be divided into authentic and created materials. Authentic materials have some advantages: they are more interesting and motivating for the students, who gain confidence when they understand them. But these materials can be rather difficult for understanding. Common created materials can be more easily understood and can be graded to the level of the students and include crosswords, flashcards, puzzles, etc. Course books are very useful because it is easier and less time-consuming for a teacher to have and use them during the lesson than to design a syllabus and create materials from scratch. Usually, course books provide a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work, they also offer continuity, the materials are appealing to the eye and usually have been tested. It also offers many ideas for inexperienced teachers. On the other hand, course books do not always fit the specific needs and interests of all the students in the class. Sometimes course book can become predictable and boring and it can stop the teacher from being creative and searching for activities which will motivate their students. I find it useful to know that there are four different options for course book use. When using a course book the teacher can decide to omit some material or exercises. Instead of omitting unsuitable exercises the teacher can replace them with some more appropriate material. Sometimes the teacher can add extra material or adapt it in his or her own style. When analyzing a course book the teacher should consider some factors, such as price, availability, design, methodology, skills, difficulty, topics and syllabus, etc. I think that this analysis will help me to choose a course book for my future classes.
