Language is very important in this day and age for its what us humans use as a primary source to communicate. Different methods on how to learn a second language have been developing at least since the 1700s, when people were trying to translate ancient Greek and Latin transcripts into their native language. Over the last 300 years we have come a long way to finding the best method possible to learn a second language. In 1998, Jeremy Harmer wrote a book called 'How to Teach English' and from this book a method was formed which is widely used to this day in schools around the world. This method is called ESA Engage, Study, Activate. As the name suggests this method has three main stages. The Engage stage is merely to get the students speaking in the English language. It is very important to include all students in this stage and make sure each student has a chance to speak. Once the Students are fully engaged then its time to move on to the 'study' stage of the lesson. This stage is where the teacher can teach the students new concepts, grammar or vocabulary. This is often followed by a worksheet to help the students start to use the new language points they have just learned. Finally once the students have absorbed the information we move on the activate stage. The 'activate' stage is when the students can use this new language plus the language they already know in real life situations. Role play is often used in this part of the lesson where students pair up and act out a scene for example, Doctor and patient. A lesson should start with an engage stage and end with an activate stage however, the stages in the middle are up to the teacher, a mix is often nice so lessons don't get too repetitive. I agree that this method ESA is a great way to teach a lesson for it involves everyone, gives the students a lot of talk time and it really allows the students to think in the new language.
