This unit explains receptive skills (reading and listening), difficulties students may have with reading and listening activities, and what basic ?keys? should be used for a successful receptive skill lesson. There are two reasons why people read or listen. People read/ listen for a specific reason (instructions) or entertainment (reading a novel). Understanding of the text depends on different skills: predictive skill (predicting context from a headline), scanning (concentrate only on the information the person wants to read or hear), detailed information (read every word), and deduction (focus on phrases). Students can have some problems while learning how to read and write. Students have usually less problems with reading because the text is captured in front of them and they can read it again if necessary. Listening can be more problematic, they can have problems with speed of speech, accent of the speaker... The teacher can help students with pre-teaching difficult language (vocabulary and grammar) and with careful selection of text and topics that will generate interest among the students. To have a successful lesson (with focus on reading and listening) material should be interesting for students, teachers should build interest before reading or listening the text, if necessary pre-teaching difficult vocabulary, choosing variety of materials and use realistic comprehension tasks that student will understand. In this unit I learned about difficulties students might have while reading and listening and approaches to minimize those problems. A lot of it depends on selection of topic of the materials. If the teacher generates interest from students learning for them will be much easier. They will not focus so much on the things they do not understand and more on the text as a whole. It helps if the teacher knows a little bit about the students and the topics they might like.
