In order for students to learn a new language, they need to be exposed to the language, understands its meaning and structure, and be able to practice it and produce it. Thus, teachers have to incorporate vocabulary, grammar, and functions in their lessons. Most language schools focus their lessons in one area, but it is best to combine all. This unit teaches about how to combine these areas, incorporating the ESA methods; it also gives some teaching techniques for every ESA stage to use in each of the three areas. It is very important to begin with vocabulary in every lesson as students need to be introduced with the words that will help them learn and succeed in the language they will be taught. Some of the things that teachers need to take in when choosing the vocabulary for their lessons are the words' appropriacy to the students and the activities, the frequency the students will encounter the words, how to apply those words in different situations, and how to make the words easy to understand to the students. In addition to how to choose the words, teachers have to know what aspects of the vocabulary students need to learn. Students need to know the meaning of the words, their use, their grammar, their pronunciation, their spelling, and their interaction with other words. When teaching grammar, teachers need to make sure that students understand its meaning, its patterns and forms, and how and when to use the grammar. Finally, when teaching language functions, which include inviting, agreeing, suggesting, etc., it is required to show students how to use the language formally and informally. Language functions also require to apply the new language in spoken scenarios. Therefore, when teaching students language functions, it will be most effective to teach them using the boomerang or the patchwork ESA approaches because teachers can include as many activate stages as needed in their lessons.
