This unit focused on parts of speech. It explained the use of nouns, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, and gerunds. There are numerous rules to follow in the English language, however, I learned from the lesson that there are not only exceptions to most (if not every) rule, but there are also times in which the teacher may want to teach what comes most intuitively to him/her depending upon the context. An example of the former is evidenced in verb conjugation. While there are rules for the conjugation of verbs, English (like other languages) consists of many irregular verbs which follow no particular rule and thus, must simply be memorized. An example of the latter is in the ordering of adjectives. There are a myriad of exceptions and differences of opinion concerning how to order adjectives (for example: size-age-color-material-noun). The numerous ways adjectives may be ordered results in the teacher, at times, teaching what comes naturally/intuitively. Despite the lengthy lesson about the rules of the different parts of speech in this unit, English is complicated and full of exceptions to rules and patterns (even in the most basic of sentence structures).
