This last grammar unit covered modal auxiliary verbs, phrasal verbs and the use of passive voice in English. The modal verbs are used to add meaning to the main verb in a sentence. An example would be, \"I must go.\" Must is the modal verb that adds meaning to the verb \"go.\" Must states obligation. Passive voice changes the order of the subject and object of a sentence. The sentence meaning is basically the same but the focus changes. It is used when the subject is not known, or we don't want to say or it is not important. Phrasal verbs are an idiomatic phrase that consists of a verb and an adverb or preposition or both that changes the meaning of the original verb. An example would be \"break down.\" The verb means to break something, an item perhaps. But it could also mean that someone had a \"break down\" after hearing bad news. I learned some useful techniques for teaching these grammar items in class. For example, to teach modal verbs doing a role play between a doctor and a patient. The doctor could use modals for advice or to convey what the patient must do. Also, for phrasal verbs, I could keep track of the ones taught and use them often in class so students hear how they are used.
