This unit focuses on course development. First, what to do at the very beginning of a course is stated: how to proceed from the very first meeting with the students, moving onto level testing and needs analysis. This will help the teacher to arrange the groups of learners and to work out a preliminary syllabus. Then, the unit focuses on the creation of a syllabus: an overview of different types of syllabus is given and how to design a new one from scratch is explained. Also the limiting factors when creating a syllabus are considered: these may include cultural issues, time limits, the employer, the resources the teacher is given as well as the students themselves. Subsequently, examinations and course evaluations are taken into account: how to assess students' knowledge/progress using the appropriate type of test is discussed. These include diagnostic, placement, aptitude, achievement, proficiency and progress tests. Moreover, which are the three Cambridge Young Learners of English levels (starters, movers and flyers) and how the tests for each level are structured are explained. At last, the pros of having the students evaluate your course and give feedback on the syllabus used are reported.
