In this unit, modal verbs and their use, have been explained, as well as phrasal verbs and then the passive voice. Modal verbs such as ought to, should, would, can, might and may add meaning to other verbs and they also express varying degrees of certainty about a particular situation e.g. This new brand of battery should last longer than the previous. (this expresses 90% certainty) This new brand of battery might last longer than the previous brand. (this expresses 50% certainty). Phrasal verbs include use of intransitive verbs (verbs followed by an object) and clauses, which join sentences together to properly express the intended meaning. When using the active voice in a sentence, the focus is on the doer of the action. The passive voice, on the other hand, is used when the doer of an action in the sentence is unknown, not important, or does not need to be mentioned. It is also used when the focus of the statement is on the action and not on the doer e.g. The local authorities will confiscate all unauthorised vehicles. (active voice) All unauthorised vehicles will be confiscated. (passive voice) Mozart composed this piece. (active voice) This piece was composed by Mozart. (passive voice)
