This unit analyzes modal auxiliary verbs and passive voice. It also includes a brief summary of phrasal verbs and relative clauses. English language learners are often confused by modal auxiliary verbs, because they are used differently than other verbs and in a variety of situations. A modal verb is a verb that is always combined with another verb, in order to show complete meaning of a sentence. Modal verbs are used to express ability, advice, permission, possibility, request, prohibition, etc. Modal verbs are often challenging for English learners, this happens for many reasons, including grammar rules, meaning and their usages in a particular sentence or context. The passive voice is less used than the active voice. There are sometimes good reasons to use the passive voice. We ca use the passive voice to emphasize the action rather than the actor, to describe a condition when the actor is unknow and to avoid naming the actor. A teacher must focus on teaching active voice structures first, because it is usually the easiest way for the students to phrase sentences, as students progress in their studies, they will be able to understand passive voice sentences and use them in classroom activities.
