In any language, there are both receptive and productive skills. Receptive skills include reading and listening. These can be done either to help achieve some specific goal or simply for enjoyment. The way that a person reads or listens depends heavily on what the person is trying to get out of material. The key difference is how the mind engages with and processes the material. Difficulties in language that a learner may come across in material can be alleviated through pre-teaching vocabulary and selecting appropriate materials. Students can be more fully engaged by choosing interesting topics, creating interest in the material, and by giving them tasks associated with the material.
