Unit 11 stresses the importance of reading and listening skills as a means to understanding language. The unit lists and explains the specialized skills needed by readers and listeners. Instruction is then provided for teachers to implement the proper techniques needed to gain student understanding. The importance of topic selection is stressed in the unit. The need to select a topic of interest to the group is of primary importance. Of course, the level of interest may well vary among a particular group of students, but varying the text over time, is a sensible way of overcoming this problem. The unit concludes with sample exercises which reinforce reading and listening skills.
