While it is important for students to have a knowledge of external exams, it is equally important that instructors teach at a level that connects with the student. In other words, teaching to the exam ignores the level of the student. It privileges the exam over the learner. Learners tend to be forgotten. Conversely, an external exam may not always properly gauge what the student has learned. There are different layers to learning from those with different personalities, characteristics, and socio-economic backgrounds. That's another issue that should be dealt with: how one's socioeconomic context bears on the learning of a new language.
