I thought the telephone call role-plays were an interesting way to supplement the textbook. This allows student to recall and use language on the spot in realistic situations. You have to be able to both understand what your partner is saying and respond to express the idea on the card. This is much more useful than a scripted role-play in which you already know what you have to say and theres no reason to listen to your partner at all. Magazine pictures are also an interesting authentic material for storytelling. Another interesting authentic material that came to mind is showing a movie clip on mute and having the students create the dialogue.
