Past tense is used to express actions that occurred in the past. There are four categories; The past simple (verb + -end or irregular form of verb) is used to describe a completed activity that started and ended in the past. Eg. I worked. The past continuous (was/were) + (verb+-ing) is used to describe an ongoing activity in the past before another action. Eg. I was working. Past perfect (had) +(past participle) is used to emphasize that the action was completed before another took place.Eg I had worked. Past perfect continuous (had been) + (present participle) is used to show that an ongoing action in the past has ended. E.g I had been working.
