This unit covers student evaluation and progress measurement. Providing feedback to students is essential, and sometimes this should be done in a more formal way. Three common methods of assessment are: tutorials, student evaluation, and tests. Tutorials are a way to review the material from recent lessons, to discuss what the goals were and give individual or group feedback. Student evaluations are when the students give feedback about the course and what they are learning. This can be extremely helpful for teachers and students, but requires a more advanced level of communication. There are several kinds of tests that can be given to students. The first and most common is a placement test, to show which level or group is most appropriate for the student. Placement tests are often multiple choice, combined with some sort of spoken assessment and maybe a longer written component. The placement test that I?ve used is all multiple choice and focuses solely on grammar. I?ve often wished that there was a spoken element in the test that would help to assess the student's true level of comprehension and fluency. A progress test can be formal or informal, and covers the material which has already been taught. They are good for checking what information students have retained, and also for encouraging them to review the material themselves. Progress tests should be balanced and only include recent material. A diagnostic test is sometimes given at the beginning of a course to give a more in-depth picture of what the students need to work on. Practice tests are used to help prepare for a formal external examination. External tests measure proficiency in a standardized way and are used for entrance to universities, job requirements and immigration authorities. The leading exams for English learners are given by the Cambridge Assessment, and they are linked to the European Framework of Reference for Languages.
