After going through unit 18 on ?Modals, phrasal verbs and passive voices?, I feel I have gained a better and deeper understanding of the usage of modal auxiliary verbs, the passive voice and the different types of phrasal verbs. For the section on modal auxiliary verbs I feel I now have a clearer picture of what they are and how their usage adds meaning to sentences and to the main verb. I also appreciated and found very practical, having a table which shows the different types of auxiliary verbs and their usage according to different tenses. Many different ideas can be expressed in the English language, with the use of modals, such as obligation, possibility or probability, permission or prohibition, ability and advice. Depending on which modal is being used in the sentence, its meaning can very completely from one to the other, whether it is a permission or a prohibition the meaning is definitely not the same. For example: ?May I open the door for the guests to come in??, is a polite request whereas if I said: ?You must open the door when the guest arrive?? is more of an obligation. I think it is really important for EFL learners to know the difference between each modal auxiliary verbs and their usage, so they can learn and produce sentences with more meaning. For the section on passive voice, I found very practical how the passive voice and its different forms according the tense of the auxiliary verb ?be? is being used were illustrated in a table. As regards to the Phrasal Verbs, I found this section a little confusing, and not very clear, so I also checked further resource materials online on the subject, in order to complete the test at the end of unit 18. I feel this section of unit 18 could give a bit more examples of the differences between intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable phrasal verbs, their usage and how to recognize them within a text.
