Unit 19 is centered around the teaching of special groups, such as beginners, individuals, children business people and monolingual vs. multilingual. Teachers must be prepared to teach any category of students. Regardless of the methodology used, there are some common practices for teachers to bear in mind when teaching any group. They should be cognizant of the students needs, give clear and simple instructions, use pair/group work, use visuals, reference and praise the students, always encourage the students to speak in English and use a variety of activities and approaches throughout the course. Moreover, there are special considerations for each category of students that are specific for that particular group that teachers should also be aware of. For example, beginners can be of any age, therefore, the teacher must be prepared to teach on those levels. When teaching individuals, the teacher must be prepared to serve as partner to the student since there will be the absence of classroom dynamics. In the case of business English students, you may teach individuals or groups within a company or students from the same company or different companies may enroll in a language school. The teacher will need to pay attention to attendance and the diverse levels of the students. Monolingual and monolingual students share the same aim, and that is to learn English for whatever reasons. Monolingual students will have less exposure to the language compared to multilingual students.Teachers must be prepared to deal with the different language levels and difficulties presented within each group. It is this writer's opinion that two main considerations when teaching English is to assess the students needs, whether individual or group, and to structure lessons to meet those needs. If the teacher knows their needs, then he/she can help students to elicit the language far more effectively and thus create well balanced English learners.
