In this unit I have learnt that it is vital that as an EFL teacher I develop a sound knowledge of the tense system. This is because many EFL learners' own languages will have less tenses and therefore this is an area where a lot of confusion can arise. It is helpful that the unit has been divided into areas as this will support me in planning lessons covering tenses and grammar. These areas can be incorporated into the ESA lesson plans. I have learnt FORM is important because it shows affirmative, negative and question examples of the tense or grammar point. By placing the tenses in such a pattern it has helped me to see them more clearly and therefore will help me to be a more effective teacher. I have also learnt the sentence construction in each form has a pattern to follow. It is important that I am familiar and confident in these structures so I can explain them clearly to my students. I have learnt that how and under what circumstances the tense or grammar point is used, is very important. I have realised that many tenses can be used in different ways and have several usages. As an EFL teacher it is vital I am familiar with these usages so that I can explain them clearly to my students. Recognising typical student errors is vital as students can easily get into bad habits. Therefore, I am aware having clear strategies to correct commonplace mistakes is very useful. Being familiar with numerous active stage teaching ideas is also important to enable me to create dynamic lessons where students will be able to talk and communicate using the 'tense' or 'grammar' point that is being taught. I have learnt that the forms of the present tense are present simple (I work), present continuous (I am working), present perfect (I have worked) and present perfect continuous (I have been working). After completing this unit I am more confident recognising these forms of the present tense although I will need to revisit them at a later stage.
