Unit 10 made use of two videos that showed us the difference between an ineffective way to present a lesson and a much more effective presentation of the same lesson. In the first video, the teacher comes with a superior, impersonal attitude. He does not bother to learn the students' names. He has a frown most of the time. He doesn't engage the students with anything in the beginning. In the study phase, he uses technical language without explaining or giving examples so they can understand. He doesn't answer questions fully, and their questions seem to bother him. He ignores the students while they are working on handout sheets, and doesn't bother to see if they need help or if they understand the instructions. In the activate phase, he gives no example of what he wants the students to do and doesn't give them much time to show and talk about their creations. On the other hand, the 2nd video is much more appealing. The teacher comes in and tells them his name, as well as making sure he has something written to tell him each of their names. He smiles often. He presents a fun engage phase that encourages all the students to participate. HE encourages the students and makes the lesson fun. He elicits a lot of answers from the students and gives them a lot of opportunities to talk. In the study phase, he gives clear and simple instructions for the written exercises after a clear, simple, and interesting explanation of the verbs can and can't. He has lots of energy in his presentation, as well as using mime and gestures. In the activate stage, he shows a finished example of what he wants the students to do in their creation of an imaginary animal. They are much more willing to participate in the second video. In short, there were many techniques that the teacher used in the second video that helped to make the same basic lesson so much more interesting and inviting to the students. This helped the students want to participate and learn.
