Speaking and writing are productive skills in the English language classroom. People communicate because they have a purpose, they have something they want to communicate, they want to listen to/read something, or they are interested in what is being communicated. A more successful lesson will be interesting to the students and contain components of the reasons for communication. Teaching speaking and writing concerns accuracy and fluency. Accuracy is aimed at producing accurate/correct language. Fluency activities are aimed for at a student?s effectiveness at using the language. Accuracy activities are usually part of the study phase, while fluency activities typically come in the activate state. It is important to allow students to experiment with language for fluency activities and be creative, so that they can use the language comfortably and expressively as if it was their own. Speaking activities can be controlled, guided or creative. In all activities it is important to encourage the students and help them overcome barriers to their desire to speak. You can motivate them with topics and activities that will be of interest to them. Plan your lessons carefully, with clear instructing and all the students to work with other when necessary. Writing skills include additional areas of focus such as handwriting, spelling and punctuation. Students may have an additional barrier by being unfamiliar with English alphabet characters and punctuation. The English language can further be complicated because it is not a phonetic language. Students will need to be motivated to write, just as they are in speaking. Sometimes introducing games can help with this. Games can be used in the classroom to help the learning process be fun and effective. Use and modify games to focus on your language point. The games can help a student with accuracy and/or fluency. Students enjoy a variety of games, and most games can be modified to fit the ESL learning environment.
