Course book and classroom materials are necessary and important because they can be useful aids for teaching a foreign language. But while they can be great assets they may also have drawbacks. In order to prevent these drawbacks, in most cases, it is important to plan ahead. For example, if you are using the white board it would be best to plan out where you will write certain pieces of information on the board so it appears more organized. Similarly, when using technological equipment such as a computer or an online website one could prevent time being wasted by doing a run through before the class starts to ensure you are able to login to the device and access certain websites, etc. Visual aids are helpful because they reduce TTT. For example, it is simply easier to show an object than explain what it is. Also, realia can add variety and interest. Study have shown that visual aids are more stimulating and tend to be ratline in one's memory much longer. Dictionaries should not be used often in the classroom, however, it is okay to refer to when doing homework. Resource books are good because they are pre-made, they are graded for a specific level, they offer continuity, the students expect it, and it is helpful for inexperience teachers. Course books disadvantages include not covering material suitable for the class or interesting, and it has a tendency to dictate the class when the teachers should be leading the course. The best way to use a course book is by making it balanced. That means not relying on the workbook all the time, omitting certain parts that don't pertain to your class out of it, supplementing certain exercises or sessions, and adapting the lesson to your own style or the classroom's needs and interest. Created materials are made by the professor or students. They include flash cards, crossword puzzles, word searched and role play cards. Students tend to rely more on authentic materials, however, because they are \"real\" pieces of information.
