Unit 8 discusses some of the complex uses of the present tense. There are different tenses and ideas which can be applied to the future tense in the English language. However, the simple future follows some predictable patterns from the simple present. With the exception that the future simple adds the word ?will,? The verb forms and structures of the future simple, future continuous, the future perfect and future perfect continuous are similar to those in the present tense. The simple future includes the word ?will,? followed by the verb base in its present simple form: e.g. I will run. In the case of the future continuous tense, the word ?will,? is followed by the verb to be and the verb base in its present participle form: e.g. I will be running at 6:00 AM tomorrow morning. The future perfect uses the word ?will,? followed by the auxiliary verbs have and are and the verb base in its past participle form: e.g. I will have run 1 hour by 7:00 AM tomorrow morning. In the case of the future perfect continuous, the word ?will,? is also followed by the verbs have and be and the verb base is in its present participle form: e.g. I will have been running 1 hour by 7:00 AM tomorrow morning. Beyond the expected verb forms and structures of the Future simple, future continuous, future perfect and the future perfect continuous, the reading includes three other ways to express future meanings: be going + infinitive, present simple and the present continuous. The be going + infinitive form uses the verb to be, followed by the verb go in its present participle form and a verb in its base form: e.g. I am going to run tomorrow morning. The reading also indicates that the present simple can include future meanings: e.g. I leave to the running track at 5:30 AM tomorrow morning. Finally, the present continuous can also be used to express future meaning as the following sentence would suggest: I?m running at the track in one hour from now.
